Policy on Closure of the College Due to Adverse Weather and Other Conditions

The following is an excerpt from the “Policy on Closure of the College Due to Extenuating Circumstances”:

General Policy

When inclement weather prevails (ice, snow, or natural disaster) or other hazardous conditions exist, the President or his designee will determine whether the college will be closed and/or what activities of the college will be canceled or postponed. Announcements about the closing and reopening of the College, cancellations or postponements of classes and other activities, and whether college personnel and students should report to work or class will be made by utilizing the following outlets:

1. Local television stations
2. Social media platforms
3. College website
4. Spartan Alert System (SAS)

The Director of Marketing and Recruitment (Public Information Officer) will contact television stations and update the College website.  The Director of Public Safety and Security will maintain the SAS.  Activities of the College will proceed as scheduled unless specifically announced otherwise.  The college will reschedule classes canceled because of inclement weather as necessary.

Curriculum and Workforce Development/Continuing Education Missed Classes:

When the College is closed for inclement weather or other hazardous conditions, instruction will continue by posting an alternative assignment in the College’s learning management system (LMS). The following additional alternative methods may be utilized to ensure that instructional time is met for all courses:

1. Outside class assignment
2. Extending the length of class session meeting times
3. Conducting class on alternative meeting days
4. Shifting instruction to synchronous virtual instruction
5. BLET, Cosmetology courses identified to meet state board required hours, nursing clinical hours, and other health-related courses with a clinical component, must make up missed instruction by extending class time on regularly scheduled days and/or additional days (except College holidays) due to state accrediting agency guidelines that have minimum clock hour requirements.

Any makeup of instructional time must meet the needs of all students involved and cannot conflict with the schedule of other classes. Each missed class session for any reason requires the faculty member or instructor to complete a Missed Assignment Form that describes how instruction will be made up. The division Dean and Vice President of Curriculum/Chief Academic Officer must approve each form. The Vice President of Workforce Development and Continuing Education must approve Workforce Development/Continuing Education forms. All documentation is maintained until released from all compliance reviews.

Career and College Promise classes scheduled at local high schools will operate according to the inclement weather schedule of the public schools.
